International Management and Leadership
The course prepares students for a career in international organizations. It familiarizes them with theories, concepts, and tools from international relations/political science, public administration, and business management. Students practice and develop management skills and competencies such as strategic and results-based management, project planning, cross-cultural communication, and working in teams. |
International Development Policy and Administration
This course familiarizes students with the field of international development cooperation. It reviews definitions of development, ethical arguments for development aid, and 'grand' development theories and strategies. It then introduces students to the “aid industry,” including the role of different actors and aid modalities. It closes by zooming in on issues of good governance and fragile states. Students the work in teams to develop a strategy for achieving one of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of their choice. |
Public Administration, Good Governance and Development
This class provides students with a deeper understanding of “good” governance and its different interpretations, the role public administration plays in fostering it, and what governments, international organizations, and civil society can do to strengthen the quality of governance and the performance of the public sector. Students apply what they learned by analyzing governance challenges in a country and sector of their choice. |
Research Design for International Relations (IR) Practitioners
The course prepares students to critically evaluate and use social science research to inform policy-making. It introduces them to the methodologies social scientists use to study real-world problems, giving an overview of issues such as the role of theory in social science, operationalizing and measuring concepts, sampling and data collection methods, research design, causal inference, and different types of validity in case-study research as well as statistical research. Students apply these concepts by reviewing research articles and datasets, and by developing a research design for an applied research project. |
